A few years ago, my wife and I bought our first house. Sadly, it had ugly floors: Cheap linoleum and ugly faux-sub-berber carpet that looked like a herd of elephants had given birth on it.
Before the holidays, we finally decided to do something. The debate raged for weeks: Tile, more linoleum, better carpet, wood? But I remembered a friend tipping me off to acid-stained concrete. We started looking into it and found Andy through a larger commercial concrete stainer who said our job was too small for them (about 500 square feet for our living room, kitchen and dining room).
We met Andy and had a good chat with him about what we needed to do. The process took four days from start to finish. Moving everything out of our first floor was a flaming pain. We had our refrigerator on our patio, and had to tiptoe downstairs after the first day.
But holy cow, what a transformation! We went with a blend of lighter colors and it came out looking almost like natural hard rock.
The price is about $5 per square foot. Cheap as crappy carpet, but without the ugliness. And it'll last longer and not attract as much dust.
