The largest continiously inhabited castles in Europe, and One of the Queen’s official residences. First constructed before 1100 AD, and much enlarged and improved until a final remodelling in the 1820’s and 30’s. You can tour the State Apartments (still in use for special occasions today) and visit St George’s Chapel. An exquisite example of Perpendicular architecture. Here the Queens’s parents, grand parents and great grandparents are all buried, as are King Henry VIII and King Charles I. After Windsor we take the country roads to Marlow, on the banks of the River Thames, and then up into the Chiltern Hills. A little known area of outstanding natural beauty, small farms, quaint villages, beechwoods and bluebells. From here it is less than 20 Miles to Oxford. City of dreaming spires, the oldest university in the UK. Oxford was at various times home to JRR Tolkein, Charles Dodgson (AKA Lewis Carroll) Margaret Thatcher, Tony Blair, Bill Clinton, and a host of other luminaries. Here are some of the most beautiful buildings in Europe, and a history that stretches back to the mid 13th Century.Follow the route taken by Chaucer’s pilgrims, starting at London bridge, to Canterbury Cathedral to see the shrine of Thomas Becket. A cathedral has stood here since 602AD, the present building dates from 1070 AD in parts, with many later additions including the Bell Harry Tower of 1505 which rises 235 feet above the cathedral and the city and is visible for miles around.Dover Castle, perched on top of the famous white cliffs contains the remains of a Roman lighthouse, a 12th C keep, many buildings from the time of the Napoleonic Wars and a fascinating journey underground to the secret WWII bunkers cut into the cliffs, used a planning centre , a communication HQ and also a wartime hospital. France is only 21 miles away, and can usually be seen from the top of the cliffs.Only got one day? With a private Guide and car or minivan for up to 6/7 people you really can see all the famous sights of London in a day;Buckingham Palace, The Changing of the Guard, The Houses of Parliament, Big Ben, Westminster Abbey, Trafalgar Square, The Millennium Bridge, St Paul’s Cathedral, The Tower of London, Tower Bridge, Tate Modern. There will be plenty of time to stop and take photographs whenever you wish, also time for a pub lunch and visits to one or two of the sites mentioned above. Favourite choices are often Westminster Abbey, scene of the coronation of all the Kings and Queens of England ( with 2 exceptions) since 1042AD, also where the Queen was married, where Princess Diana’s funeral was held, as was the funeral of the Queen Mother.
